Breast milk is proven to be the best nutrition for infants, and the easiest milk for babies to digest. Breastfeeding benefits a lactating parent as well as providing a wonderful bonding attachment with baby. Breast milk not only includes essential nutrition, but also passive immunity, which provides health protection for a newborn. Breastfeeding can include more than latching at the breast!
Breastfeeding is natural, but isn’t always understood well. The journey may present challenges that interrupt short-term success and long-term goals. In today’s modern world, a prenatal breastfeeding education isn’t routinely provided during pregnancy, often requiring the expectant family to search this out. Lactation support isn’t guaranteed while in the hospital, and many questions arise after new mothers/parents go home. The maternity stay in a hospital is only 24-48 hours for an uncomplicated delivery (C-section 48-96 hours) often before the milk comes in). This may leave new families deficient in breastfeeding knowledge and in need of support when challenges arise.
I breastfed my own 3 children for over 4 years, and volunteered for a hospital program for 7 years, supporting new mothers in breastfeeding and parenting. I worked in a clinic for 3 years as a breastfeeding specialist, communicating with many women about their breastfeeding journeys. So many shared about their struggles that they didn’t have milk, or baby refused to latch. Women are often willing to accept the issue is with them. But understanding how lactation works can help prepare you for your own breastfeeding journey. My education and support has helped many new and multiparous mothers/parents succeed.
